Short description: The objective of this project is to explore using probability to approximate the value of pi. Hernandez Mathematical content and domain: Algebra-probability Using Probability to Approximate Piĭavid N. The activity would be appropriate in a course introducing concepts in regression analysis or at a more advanced level (such as AP Statistics) to reinforce and extend these ideas. This optimization technique connects students' knowledge of quadratic functions with statistics, and in the process, deepens their understanding of the least squares linear regression line. Building on intuitive guess-and-check methods to estimate the least squares line, students experiment with the underlying quadratic relationship between slope and residuals to accomplish this goal more effectively. This activity uses dynamic statistical software (Fathom) to engage students in an exploration of this concept. How does one determine a best-fit line for a set of data? One approach is to find the line with the smallest overall error in prediction, or more precisely, the line that minimizes the sum of the squared deviations from the observed data to that line. A Parabolic Path to a Best Best-Fit Line:įinding the Least Squares Regression LineBy Exploring the Relationship between Slope and Residuals This lesson is intended for any student in Pre-AP Algebra I or an Algebra II class. Marla Cortes This lesson uses the least squares linear regression to explore the squares in least squares and minimize the areas of the squares built on residuals for a 100m freestyle Olympic comparison of Men's winning times and Women's winning times from 1948 to 1992. Students are also led to find the equations for the graphs for these figures. There are three extensions to this activity: squares, circles, and triangles. Students are led to discover the equations for the borders of this, somewhat surprising, graph. Using Fathom, the graph of the areas of 1000 random rectangles are plotted as a function of their perimeters. The activity relates to the relationship, initially, between the area and perimeters of rectangles. The last four pages, involving triangles, require a comfort with quadratic equations. The first six pages of the activity are fully approachable by students who have seen equations of parabolas, but less advanced students will still get a lot out of the activity. This activity is designed for teachers to use in algebra or geometry classes. What is the relationship between the area of a rectangle and its perimeter? John Mahoney Fathom permits the user to randomize the sampling process to determine if the conclusions remain the same with different samples. Using the dynamic statistical software program, Fathom, this question is addressed by performing a Test for Independence of Categorical Attributes using a chi-square test. The question is whether the differences between the responses, based on gender, is statistically significant. In the problem a group of 200 voters are asked how they feel about the question: "The mayor is doing an excellent job." The gender and response from each voter is recorded in a table. This unit parallels a similar problem from the 2003 Advanced Placement Statistics exam. Do Women and Men Respond Differently to a Survey Question? John Mahoney There will be a worksheet and explanation to solve the problem with TI-83. The solution will run several samples so as to keep track of the expected family size and the expected probability of having a boy. Using Fathom, write a simulation to model theprobability that the family will have one boy. However, due to financial and medical concerns, they do not want to havemore than 3 children. Problem: A husband and wife want to have a boy to pass on the family name. I am working on writing a simulation to model the probability of a familyhaving a specified number of children. Stack Overflow Anaconda Keeping Anaconda Up To Date What is the correct way to update Anaconda and Conda base ![]() Sound, always a series high-point, is still quite good in Company of Heroes 3. ![]() The tactical options it opens up made me think about engagements in new ways. You can have units go into buildings not just as a garrison, but through them – in one door and out the other – to outflank enemy positions. The play and counter-play of diverse tactical options is superb: when up against a strong, garrisoned building you can use mortars, grenades, smoke, or even direct a close-quarters assault by some infantry units to flush out enemies. North African maps alternate desolate landscape with rocky ridges, wide valleys, and small, densely packed settlements. Italian maps almost always have a mix of hills, streams, broad vineyards, and dense villages or towns. In fact, this may well be the best urban combat I've ever seen in an RTS, and the map design is a key part of that in both campaigns. The Italian maps are particularly great, emphasizing gaining elevation over enemies and forcing the fighting to alternate between fields and winding, tight urban environments unlike anything the series has done so far. It's so much fun to maneuver units from place to place, with infantry vaulting over obstacles or diving for cover as vehicles struggle to navigate cramped roadways or tanks smash through walls and buildings. The maps consistently present fun situations that understand how maneuver is at the heart of Company of Heroes firefights. If you ignore all of that story and campaign context, which you might, the scenario and map design in both North Africa and Italy are actually quite good. It'd be neat as a bite-size prelude to the Italian Campaign, but the story falls flat as anything other than some pretty animatics and a series of decent RTS scenarios. The juxtaposition is poorly handled, failing to show the context of how action in one affects the other. These are two interesting stories, but the way they're presented alongside each other doesn't work. What’s odd is that, interleaved with those scenarios, is the story of the war as narrated by a North African Jewish family that has been split apart by the German-Italian invasion and conquest, showing how Nazi and Fascisti occupation so devastated those communities that they barely exist today. ![]() You play as Rommel's Afrika Korps, fighting marquee battles from the Germans’ very successful campaigns of 19. It's all very visually similar to the setup of the Total War series. ![]() It has theoretically complex systems in which your armies – called companies (with heroes in them) – capture towns and ports using deployable air power and naval fleet movements, and build emplacements to defend territory or provide offensive bonuses in battles. The larger one is the Italian Campaign, a broad, turn-based strategic mode on a large map of central and southern Italy that has you capture territory town by town, and took me about 25 hours to complete the first time around. There are actually two single-player campaigns in CoH3. While individual missions and scenarios within the strategic sandbox are strong and even thrilling at times, almost every feature on the strategic map doesn't work, either because it's bugged or because it's such middle-of-the-road game design that it's simply boring. What I'm very displeased about is that the ambitious Italian campaign mode is incredibly disappointing. I'm pleased to say that Company of Heroes 3 implements those series fundamentals quite well in a gentle remix that brings the series to diverse theaters of World War 2 that it hadn't touched yet. The Company of Heroes series is near and dear to my heart – all three of them are real-time strategy games that cut to the core of the genre, focusing on overarching strategic decisions coupled with tactical troop movements and a battlefield that truly matters. ![]() If you’re not going north of Tokyo but south to Kyoto and Osaka, Arashiyama Monkey Park in Kyoto is another popular viewing spot. Japanese, on the other hand, are few in number and the park is not well known nationally despite its fame on the worldwide stage. ![]() Winter is the most popular season for visiting and it’s usually crowded with foreign tourists. It’s a joy to watch the humanlike interactions between members of the same monkey tribe or “troop”, not to mention seeing them take a dip in the hot springs inside the park! These monkeys are very used to humans and won’t hesitate to approach within an arms length of you. It’s located in the same region as Hakuba and you can even see serows on the far banks across the river from time to time, too! You can see them at “ Jigokudani Monkey Park” in Nagano Prefecture, the very same place David Attenborough visited. These are the northernmost living primates in the world and the only ones to live in a climate with snowfall. Snow Monkey/ Japanese Macaque (サル "Saru")Ī lot of people have heard of or seen Japan’s “snow monkeys”, thanks to their now well dated debut with David Attenborough on BBC. They have a number of English-speaking guides, and are located just an hour and a half Shinkansen from Tokyo.Ģ. If you want to 100% guarantee a wild serow sighting, why not join Picchio Wildlife Research Centre’s tour? While on the pricier side, the tour includes a guided hike, lunch on the mountain and the insight of professional guides. If you catch the first ski lifts early in the morning, you have a high chance of spotting them, however they have also been seen from roads in the area throughout the day. A popular place they are spotted is Hakuba, well known as a winter sports resort and for hosting the Winter Olympics some years ago. It may be worth bringing binoculars to scout the open areas too. If you’re going hiking up a mountain, keep your eyes peeled for serow. Serow can be spotted in mountainous areas in Honshu and Shikoku. The Japanese Serow species is endemic to Japan and and can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Sure enough, they do have a very spirit-like air about them and an encounter with a serow is one you’re unlikely to forget! If you’ve ever seen the Studio Ghibli film “Princess Mononoke”, you might be curious to know that the Forest Spirit character is based on this mysterious animal. Looking at its photo, you might be thinking, what on earth is this creature? A donkey? A goat? Actually, serows are ungulates, meaning they’re relatives of cows. Since I don’t personally go to zoos in Japan after seeing my first few free zoos here, I can’t tell you exactly what those zoos are going to be like, though. Though I will make some zoo recommendations for species which are difficult to spot, I will stick to zoos which I have heard good things about. ![]() Secondly, the animals pose a safety hazard and will be killed to prevent risk of attacks on humans.) This affects the livelihood of local farmers and usually results in animals being killed to protect farms. If they become used to humans and human food, they’re more likely to eat crops or approach livestock. They also reduce the problem of people feeding food to wild animals at random. While not entirely natural, they are a step above many zoos, as animals are fed by the park staff at set times only and otherwise left to their own devices. This isn’t an issue I’m going to go into in this article, but for various reasons I strongly encourage taking a wildlife tour or attempting to spot for animals while taking a hike on a well-established trail instead. While it may be easy to see these species in a zoo, the conditions of many zoos in Japan are admittedly not as great as one might hope. ![]() Please note that some jurisdictions may not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so some of the above exclusions may not apply to you. ![]() The sugar pine occurs in the mountains of Oregon and California in the Western United States, and Baja California in northwestern Mexico specifically the Cascade Range, Sierra Nevada, Coast Ranges, and Sierra San Pedro Martir. Sugar pine never grows in pure stands, always in a mixed forest and is shade tolerant in youth. The seeds are 1–2 cm ( 1⁄ 2– 3⁄ 4 in) long, with a 2–3-centimeter ( 3⁄ 4– 1 + 1⁄ 4-inch) long wing that aids their dispersal by wind. Sugar pine is notable for having the longest cones of any conifer, mostly 10–50 cm (4– 19 + 3⁄ 4 in) long, exceptionally to 60 cm ( 23 + 1⁄ 2 in) long (although the cones of the Coulter pine are more massive) their unripe weight of 1–2 kilograms (2.2–4.4 lb) makes them perilous projectiles when chewed off by squirrels. Like all members of the white pine group ( Pinus subgenus Strobus), the leaves ("needles") grow in fascicles ("bundles") of five, with a deciduous sheath. The upper branches can reach out over 8 m (26 ft). The bark of Pinus lambertiana ranges from brown to purple in color and is 5–10 centimeters (2–4 in) thick. Old sugar pines in the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest, southern Oregon Yosemite National Park also has the third tallest, measured to 80.5 m (264 ft 1 in) tall as of June 2013 the Rim Fire affected this specimen, but it survived. The tallest known living specimens today grow in southern Oregon and Yosemite National Park: one in Umpqua National Forest is 77.7 m (254 ft 11 in) tall and another in Siskiyou National Forest is 77.2 m (253 ft 3 in) tall. The second tallest recorded was "Yosemite Giant", an 82.05 m (269 ft 2 in) tall specimen in Yosemite National Park, which died from a bark beetle attack in 2007. The tallest recorded specimen is 83.45 m (273 ft 9 in) tall, is located in Yosemite National Park, and was discovered in 2015. The sugar pine is the tallest and largest Pinus species, commonly growing to 40–60 meters (130–195 ft) tall, exceptionally to 82 m (269 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of 1.2–2.5 m (3 ft 11 in – 8 ft 2 in), exceptionally 3.5 m (11 ft 6 in). It is native to coastal and inland mountain areas along the Pacific coast of North America, as far north as Oregon and as far south as Baja California in Mexico. The species name lambertiana was given by the Scottish botanist David Douglas, who named the tree in honour of the English botanist, Aylmer Bourke Lambert. Pinus lambertiana (commonly known as the sugar pine or sugar cone pine) is the tallest and most massive pine tree, and has the longest cones of any conifer. |
